artynov Andrey Yefimovich
(St. Petersburg 1768 - Rome 1812)
Biography
Andrei Yefimovich Martynov was a landscape painter.
He studied at the Academy in St. Petersburg. He accompanied an expedition to Chine in 1804. His Picturesque Voyage from Moscow to the Frontiers of China, with twenty-nine illustrations of popular types, was published in French and English.
Martynov was a consciously elegant painter stressing the pleasures of life on the great estate and in its gardens. He lacked the facility to achieve this convincingly with the result that his watercolours show an elegant and aristocratic life but they are painted with a degree of awkwardness which adds to the charm.
Martynov is represented in the following collections : the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow ; the State Russian Museum ; the Shchusev Architectural Museum, Moscow ; amongst others.
